Shadeports in Edgemead
Edgemead was planned and built in the early 1970s as one of Cape Town’s “Garden Cities” developments, with curved roads, cul-de-sacs, interlinked boundary walls, and a deliberate emphasis on trees and green spaces. Five decades later, the trees are mature, the homes have settled into the landscape, and many of the original shadeports installed here are now overdue for replacement. Crown Shadeports installs and replaces shadeports across Edgemead.
What Edgemead’s Garden Cities Design Means for Shadeports
Edgemead is genuinely different from the typical Cape Town residential suburb. It was planned, not just developed: curved streets instead of grids, cul-de-sacs instead of through-roads, interlinked boundary walls between properties, and a deliberate canopy of trees. That planning shapes every shadeport we install here.
Curved driveways and odd angles
Most Cape Town driveways run perpendicular to the street. Edgemead’s curved-road planning means many driveways angle in, sweep around, or sit in cul-de-sac configurations. We measure each driveway on site and adapt the structure layout to fit; sometimes a standard rectangular four-post needs to be set at an angle, and a cantilever often works better than a four-post simply because of the geometry.
Mature trees everywhere
Edgemead’s defining feature, the “garden suburb” character, is also a real practical consideration. Trees planted in the 1970s are now 50 years mature. Many Edgemead driveways have substantial branches overhead. We assess overhanging branches during the site visit, check for sap drip and seasonal debris that could affect the shade cloth, and design pole positions to work with the trees rather than requiring you to cut anything down.
Interlinked boundary walls
A Garden Cities design feature: adjoining properties share boundary walls for visual continuity. This is convenient on the property side (no exposed brickwork) but means we can’t anchor shadeport poles into shared walls without your neighbour’s involvement. We design with the boundary in mind, usually setting poles a deliberate distance from the boundary line.
Long-term homeowner replacements
Most Edgemead homeowners have lived in their homes for over a decade. A significant proportion of our Edgemead work is replacement of older shadeports, typically structures installed in the 1990s or early 2000s that have rusted out, torn beyond repair, or simply look dated against the home. We remove the old structure, dispose of the materials, and install new in a single project.
Where We Install in Edgemead
Established family homes
The bulk of the suburb. Three- and four-bedroom freehold properties on 500 sqm stands. Standard double four-post or extended-double shadeports are the most common installations. We work with the property’s existing aesthetic shade cloth colour to complement the facade, and pole finish to match window frames or fascia.
Pensioner and retiree homes
Edgemead has a meaningful retiree population; many homeowners have been in their homes for 20+ years. A common job is the simple, no-fuss replacement of an old shadeport on a home that has had one for years. We handle these end-to-end: remove the old, install the new, clean up, hand over.
Apartments and cluster homes
Salvatore Square and other Edgemead complexes: body corporate approval is required for installations over exclusive use parking bays. We supply the technical documentation pack. Cantilever shadeports usually fit best in the narrower bays typical of complex developments.
Newer build extensions
Many original Edgemead homes were designed with future extensions in mind, a Garden Cities planning feature. Where a homeowner has recently added a garage extension, granny flat, or new wing, we frequently install a matching shadeport over the new driveway as part of the upgrade.
Types of Shadeports We Install in Edgemead
Single shadeport (3m × 6m)
For one vehicle. Common in Edgemead for apartment bays at Salvatore Square and similar complexes, and for retirees with one car.
Double shadeport (6m × 6m)
The most popular Edgemead installation. Covers two vehicles, fitting the suburb’s classic two-car household profile.
Cantilever shadeport
Posts on one side only. Useful in Edgemead where the curved driveway geometry or boundary wall position makes a four-post installation awkward. Also chosen by homeowners who want the cleaner architectural look. More on cantilever shadeports
Replacement structures
A real Edgemead sub-market. Many shadeports installed during the 1990s and early 2000s have run their course. We remove the existing structure, dispose of the materials, and install a new structure in a single 2-day project.
Shade Cloth Choice for Edgemead
Two practical considerations specific to Edgemead.
Tree cover affects the UV calculation
Many Edgemead properties already have substantial tree canopy over the driveway. Where mature trees provide significant existing shade, you may not need the highest UV rating; a standard 90–95% UV shade netting is more than enough. Where the driveway is more exposed (newer pockets of the suburb, or homes where trees have been removed), waterproof PVC with 99%+ UV blockage is the better call.
Falling leaves and seasonal debris
Edgemead’s mature trees drop leaves, blossom, and seed pods. Waterproof PVC sheds debris more easily than woven netting; leaves wash off with rain. Standard netting catches more debris and needs more regular cleaning. We mention this at the site visit so you can factor it into the choice.
For Edgemead’s typical 1970s–80s rendered or face-brick homes, charcoal and beige are the most popular shade cloth colours. We bring samples to the site visit.

Frequently Asked Questions about Shadeports
Can you replace my old Edgemead shadeport?
Yes. Replacements are a substantial portion of our Edgemead work. Many shadeports installed in the 1990s and early 2000s have rusted, torn, or simply fall short of current quality standards. We remove the old structure, dispose of materials, and install new shadeports, completed in a single 2-day project.
Can a shadeport work around the mature trees in my driveway?
Yes, almost always. Edgemead’s tree canopy is one of the suburb’s defining features; we design installations to work around existing trees rather than requiring removal. We assess overhanging branches at the site visit, check for sap and seasonal debris that could affect the shade cloth, and choose pole positions that don’t conflict with the canopy. In most cases, no tree removal is needed.
What about the curved driveways common in Edgemead?
Curved driveways and odd geometries are typical in Edgemead, a consequence of the Garden Cities planning. We design each structure to fit the actual driveway shape, not a generic rectangle. For unusual angles, a cantilever shadeport often fits better than a four-post.
Will the shadeport match my Edgemead home?
Yes. Most Edgemead homes are 30–50 years old with rendered or face-brick facades and traditional roof lines. For these properties, charcoal, beige, and dark grey shade cloth are popular choices. Poles can be powder-coated to match window frames or fascia.
Do I need waterproof or standard shade cloth?
For a driveway where the vehicle is your primary daily car daily-use, newer vehicle, or one you want to keep dry through winter, waterproof PVC is the better choice. For a driveway already well-shaded by existing trees, or for second/visitor parking, standard HDPE netting is more affordable and works very well.
