Which Shadeport Do You Need?
There are four main types of shadeport installations. The right one depends on your space, your access needs, and how much you want to spend.
Four-Post Shadeport
Covers one vehicle. Ideal for homes and flats. Available in waterproof or shade-net cloth.
- Best for: open spaces with room for corner posts
- Standard sizes: single (3m × 6m), double (6m × 6m), triple (9m × 6m)
- Available in: waterproof or standard shade netting

Cantilever Shadeport
Posts on one side only. The roof extends out over the covered area with no poles on the access side. This gives you a clear, unobstructed entry, no poles to drive around.
- Best for: narrow driveways, tight spaces, double garages where corner posts would block a door
- Slightly higher cost than four-post due to additional structural engineering
- Available in single and double bay

Wall-Mounted Shadeport
One side of the roof is fixed directly to an existing wall. Fewer poles needed, which reduces cost. The wall must be structurally sound; we assess this during the site visit.
- Best for: homes where the shadeport will sit against a garage or boundary wall
- Good option for cluster homes and sectional title units where space is limited

Commercial Multi-Bay
Multiple bays installed across a parking area, office complex, school yard, or business premises. We custom-size commercial installations to your layout and can accommodate curved or irregular sites.
- Best for: businesses, property complexes, schools, car parks
- Minimum order: 3 bays — contact us for a custom quote
- Branding options available (coloured posts, custom shade cloth colours)

Shadeport Materials We Use
Not all shadeports are built the same. The materials used in your installation determine how long it lasts and how well it handles Cape Town’s conditions.
Cape Town’s Southeaster can reach 100 km/h in summer. Salt air along the Atlantic Seaboard corrodes untreated steel within months. UV levels here are consistently high year-round — cheap shade cloth fades and tears within two to three seasons.
Steel poles
We use hot-dip galvanised steel poles, minimum 76mm diameter for standard residential bays. Hot-dip galvanising coats the steel inside and out; it does not peel, chip, or crack the way painted steel does. Along the Atlantic Seaboard and coastal suburbs, salt air corrodes untreated steel within months. Galvanised poles typically last 20 to 30 years.
Concrete footings
Poles are set in concrete to a minimum depth of 600mm. In sandy or shifting ground, common in areas like Table View and Milnerton, we go deeper. Shallow footings are the number one cause of shadeport failure in Cape Town. We do not cut this corner.
Fixings
We use stainless steel fixings and reinforced webbing at all tension points. No plastic clips. No galvanised-only fixings near the coast.
“We design each installation around your property’s wind exposure. We do a site visit before we quote — no guesswork.”

Shadeport Installation Process
Here is exactly what happens from first call to finished shadeport.
Step 1
Free site visit
We come to you. We measure the space, check the ground type, look at access angles, and note any obstacles (walls, slopes, trees, estate rules). This takes 20 to 40 minutes. There is no charge for the site visit.
Step 2
Written quote
You receive a detailed written quote within 24 hours. It specifies the structure type, dimensions, shade cloth option, pole specification, and the total price—no hidden extras.
Step 3
Installation day
A team of two to three installers arrives at the agreed time. The process:
- Mark and dig footing holes
- Set poles in concrete; concrete must be allowed to set (minimum 24 hours for standard mixes)
- Return to attach the frame and stretch the shade cloth
- Final check of tension, fixings, and alignment
- Site cleanup: we remove all waste and off-cuts
Most residential jobs are done in one to two visits over two days. The first day covers poles and concrete. The second day (usually the next morning) covers the frame and cloth.
Step 4
Handover
We walk you through the structure, checking tension, fixings, and runoff points and leave you with care instructions. Any issues post-installation are handled by us directly—no call centres.
Why Cape Town Installs Are Different
Cape Town is not a forgiving environment for outdoor structures. Most shadeport failures come down to one of three things: poor materials, shallow footings, or no account taken of local conditions.
Wind
The Cape Doctor, Cape Town’s summer Southeaster, regularly reaches 60 to 80 km/h, with gusts above 100 km/h on exposed sites. Any shadeport installed in Bloubergstrand, Milnerton, Parklands, or on the Cape Flats needs additional bracing and deeper footings. We assess wind exposure on every site visit.
Salt air
Properties within 5km of the coast, Sea Point, Camps Bay, Hout Bay, Strand, Gordon’s Bay experience accelerated corrosion. We only use hot-dip galvanised steel in these areas, never mild steel with a painted finish.
UV intensity
Cape Town’s UV index regularly hits extreme levels (8–11) in summer. Standard shade cloth rated for Johannesburg’s conditions degrades faster here. All our shade cloth is tested and rated for high UV environments.
Sectional title and estate properties
Many Cape Town homeowners live in complexes or gated estates. Body corporate approval is often required before installation. We can provide technical drawings and load calculations to support your application. We have done this for estates across Constantia, Durbanville, and Table View.

What to Watch Out for With Cheap Installs
It is worth knowing what a poor installation looks like because you will not always spot it on the day.
Poles not set deep enough
Anything less than 500mm in Cape Town’s conditions is a risk. Shallow-set poles sway, lean, and eventually fail in high wind. Ask your installer how deep the footings will go.
Mild steel poles with painted finishes
Paint peels. Once the steel is exposed, corrosion starts fast, especially near the coast. Always ask whether the steel is hot-dip galvanised or just painted.
Incorrect shade cloth tension
Shade cloth that is installed too loose tears in the wind. Cloth installed too tight puts strain on the fixings and frame joints. Correct tension matters; you will not see the difference on day one, but you will after the first big storm.
No site assessment
If an installer quotes you over the phone without visiting the site, be careful. Ground conditions, slope, access angles, and wind exposure all affect the installation. A quote without a site visit is a guess.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does installation take?
Most residential shadeports are installed over two days. Day one: mark, dig, and set poles in concrete. Day two: attach the frame and shade cloth once the concrete has cured. Commercial or multi-bay jobs take longer depending on size.
What is the difference between waterproof and standard shade cloth?
Standard shade netting is woven HDPE; it allows some air through and blocks 90–95% of UV. It will let light rain through. Waterproof shade cloth is a solid PVC-coated fabric. It keeps out rain completely and blocks over 99% of UV. Both carry a 10-year UV guarantee. Waterproof cloth is recommended for cars, caravans, or boats where you want full weather protection.
How do I know what size shadeport I need?
A single shadeport (3m × 6m) covers one standard vehicle with room to open the doors. A double (6m × 6m) covers two vehicles side by side. If you have an SUV, bakkie, or caravan, measure your vehicle first; we can size the structure to fit. We always measure on-site before quoting.
Can you install a shadeport on a sloped driveway?
Yes. Sloped driveways need poles of different heights to keep the roof level or correctly angled for runoff. We design for this on every sloped site; it is more common in Cape Town than most people expect, particularly in the Southern Suburbs.
How do I maintain my shadeport?
Once a year, check that all fixings are tight and that the shade cloth has no small tears. Rinse the shade cloth with water after major storms to remove debris. Repaint the pole bases with a zinc-rich primer every three to five years if you see any rust forming. We carry out service visits if needed.
Can you repair a shadeport that was installed by someone else?
Yes. We repair torn shade cloth, bent or rusted frames, and poorly anchored poles. We will assess what needs doing and give you a quote. In some cases, a full replacement is more cost-effective than repair; we will tell you honestly which it is.
